So, what are Third Spaces?

Where the lines between home, work, and leisure often blur, a ‘third space’ emerges as a vital component for fostering community and connection. Third spaces, also known as third places, are social environments separate from home and workplace where individuals gather, socialize, and build relationships. These spaces—physical or virtual—play a crucial role in enhancing social wellness and overall well-being.

Much like our very own third space Framework, they’re characterized by their neutrality, accessibility, and welcoming atmosphere. They provide a sense of community and belonging—hubs for social interaction and creative expression. And when not a social sauna and cold plunge studio, these spaces can take many forms. From coffee shops and parks to community centers and online forums, the importance of these environments cannot be overstated: they promote connections that enrich our lives.

Types of Third Spaces

Historically, third spaces have been significant:

  • Ancient Greek Agoras: Public squares where citizens gathered to discuss politics and philosophy.

  • Imperial Chinese Teahouses: Meeting spots for business people to socialize and transact.

  • European Coffeehouses: Venues where intellectuals congregated to discuss literature and politics.

Today, third spaces have evolved into familiar settings:

  • Coffee Shops and Cafés: Popular spots for people to work, relax, and connect over a shared beverage—speaking of, read more about our forthcoming Café later on in this article.

  • Outdoor Spaces: Parks and natural settings where—passively or actively, alone or with a group—different levels of physical activity and connection can unfold. Psychology Today has attributed social and psychological restoration to green third spaces, saying they play a large role in reducing mental fatigue, improving cognitive functioning, and promoting physical health.

  • Community Centers: Physical meeting places that serve as a resource to local events, services to foster a sense of belonging and community pride.

A significant, shared aspect of the third spaces we’ve studied and those of today is their focus on food and beverage. The Guardian has looked to a McDonalds to discuss how vital accessible third spaces can be, referring to Ray Oldenburg’s concept of third places to expand on how McDonald’s locations have organically evolved into modern equivalents of the English pub.

Safe, affordable places to socialize and maintain a sense of normalcy. And the communal nature of eating and drinking together further enhances the connective threads built in these spaces, which is a large part of why The Café at Framework is in development.

Finding your place at Framework

The importance of third spaces has become even more pronounced in 2024. NPR has said third places strengthen community, allowing people to build relationships, establish roots, and improve overall happiness—especially post-pandemic.

With changes in the dynamics of home and office, third spaces now provide essential opportunities for socialization, creativity, and personal growth (not to forget physical health at Framework, too).

Our social sauna and cold plunge studio offers fitness and social opportunities under one roof. Framework operates on a three-pronged approach: sweat, shiver, and socialize. These pillars ensure our guests engage in physical activity, challenge themselves, explore new experiences, and forge connections with others.

Here, you can come solo and meet people in the sauna, side by side in a cold plunge tub, at The Café. You can come with a friend or a group, book the same session time, and hang with your go-to crew. You could come to a class or attend a class from our new guided sauna and  cold plunge program Framework Fitness. Or you could even host your own private event.

Through hot and cold exposure practices, communal spaces, Framework Fitness, The Café at Framework, and a rotating selection of events, Framework provides a neutral environment for individuals to meet new people and build relationships. And by engaging in these spaces? We can cultivate a sense of belonging that contributes to our overall health.
